Best Streaming Services: Choose for Your Watchlist and Budget

Quick verdict · United States

My starting recommendation is Netflix for a US household choosing one TV-and-film subscription, provided it covers your watchlist. Choose Disney+ for Disney, Pixar, Marvel or Star Wars; HBO Max for HBO-led viewing; and Apple TV for its originals or relevant included sport. If you already pay for Prime, check Prime Video before adding another bill. Buy Hulu + Live TV only when live channels justify its larger continuing cost.

Scope: United States; plan information reviewed on 1 October 2026. I have used and tested the services covered here; my recommendations focus on catalogue fit, household needs and continuing cost. Catalogues, packages and prices can change. StreamTipz is independently supported by affiliate revenue; service-plan buttons lead to official providers.

These services are not identical products. The quoted Apple TV price is a continuing advertised US monthly rate, excluding promotional discounts and applicable tax. Other providers’ totals depend on the selected tier or bundle; use their current US checkout rather than a foreign-market price shown by a search result.

Netflix: my starting point for a general household

A general TV-and-film starting pointProvider image: Netflix.

I would start here when different people want different types of television and film and the household has not already chosen a particular franchise. Before paying, make a shared list of the next few things everyone wants to watch. A familiar brand has little value if that list mostly points elsewhere.

Compare the actual plan features. Netflix’s official guidance distinguishes tiers by supported picture quality, simultaneous viewing and downloads, and it sets household rules. Choose the tier that matches your equipment and viewing pattern, rather than automatically paying for the highest one.

Choose it when: the current US catalogue gives several members of the household something they intend to watch. Skip or rotate it when: you have finished the shows that justified the bill. A plan with better resolution does not add a missing title to the library.

Prime Video: check the value you may already have

Use existing Prime benefits firstProvider image: Amazon.

Prime Video’s storefront mixes included viewing, free options, rentals, purchases and extra subscriptions. My recommendation is to inspect the entitlement shown on each title, not assume that everything in the app comes with Prime.

If you already keep Prime for other reasons, start with the included catalogue. That can reduce the need for another monthly service. If you are buying purely for video, compare the video product and total cost available to you without treating unrelated benefits as automatic savings.

The tradeoff: a convenient storefront can make it easy to add several recurring subscriptions. Record each additional charge separately and check its cancellation route. A rental fee is also separate from the base subscription.

Disney+: choose it for the franchises you revisit

Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star WarsProvider image: Disney+ Press.

Disney’s own service description centres on Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic, alongside originals. That makes it a straightforward shortlist choice when those are the titles your household repeatedly requests.

I would judge its value by repeat use. A family rewatching favourites has a different buying case from someone subscribing for a single new release. Check the actual title and season in the US catalogue, then compare a standalone plan with any relevant bundle.

The tradeoff: a bundle is only cheaper for you if you would otherwise keep its other services. Do not count the advertised combined saving as money saved on subscriptions you never intended to buy. Check the renewal total and ad tier before accepting an offer.

Check Disney+ Plans

HBO Max: a strong shortlist for HBO-led viewing

HBO-led series and filmsProvider image: HBO Max.

HBO Max’s US help page describes HBO, Max Originals and selected Warner Bros., DC, Cartoon Network and other content. I would choose it when your immediate watchlist is anchored in that selection, then review the subscription after you finish the series you came for.

The practical distinction is between wanting a particular run of programmes and needing a year-round service. A discounted longer commitment can be poor value when you only intend to watch for a short period.

Check before paying: the exact plan’s ads, picture quality, download support, billing provider and commitment. Do not infer that every plan has the same features or that every Warner Bros. film is available immediately.

Apple TV: original series and sport without buying Apple hardware

Apple Originals and included sportProvider image: Apple.

Apple advertises its original shows and films plus included sports, with a US monthly price of $14.99 at this check. You can use supported apps and devices beyond Apple’s own hardware. Check the precise sport and territorial rights rather than assuming one subscription replaces every sports broadcaster.

I would shortlist it for a planned run of Apple Originals, or when the included sport already makes the subscription useful. For MLS, see our guide to watching without an Apple TV box, including the end of the separate Season Pass.

The tradeoff: it is not a cable-channel replacement. Check existing bundles or eligible benefits before buying separately, and distinguish subscription content from rentals or third-party channels shown in the app.

Check Apple TV’s Current Offer

Hulu + Live TV: when live channels justify the larger bill

Live channels plus entertainmentProvider image: Hulu.

Hulu + Live TV is the option to compare when the household needs live channels as well as on-demand entertainment. Get the current quote for your chosen live-TV bundle and check local availability before subscribing. Hulu’s current help guidance says live TV continues to use the Hulu app or website; watching eligible Hulu on-demand programmes within Disney+ is a separate viewing route.

I would consider it when several people use the live channels and bundled entertainment. If the main need is sport, first compare the sports streaming shortlist with your actual fixtures. A narrower package may meet that need at a lower cost.

The tradeoff: paying for a broad bundle becomes expensive when most viewing is a handful of on-demand series. Compare the renewal price, not just the opening promotion, and remove duplicate subscriptions only after confirming activation and billing details.

Check Hulu Live TV’s Local Lineup

The cost comparison I would actually make

Write down the services you already pay for, the next titles or events you want, and the cheapest eligible plans that include them. Keep subscription fees, rentals, add-ons and equipment separate. Compare ad-supported with ad-supported, and monthly with monthly, before judging savings.

At Apple TV’s checked US monthly rate of $14.99, three paid months would cost $44.97 before tax; twelve would cost $179.88 if the price stayed unchanged. Keeping it for nine extra paid months therefore adds $134.91 under those assumptions. Use the same month-by-month calculation for the exact eligible plan you are considering.

A hypothetical $20 service used for three months costs $60; keeping it idle for the other nine adds $180. Rotation may therefore beat an annual discount when your viewing is seasonal, provided the plan permits cancellation and you understand when access ends.

Check the device and travel rules too

Confirm support for your exact television or streaming-stick model. Profiles are not necessarily simultaneous streams, and a 4K screen does not make every plan or title 4K. For playback problems, diagnose the app, device and network before buying new equipment.

If you travel, review destination rules and downloads separately. A US subscription does not promise the same catalogue everywhere.

Do you need a VPN with your streaming subscription?

For ordinary viewing on your home connection, a VPN is optional. When you use hotel or airport Wi-Fi, it may be worth considering for connection privacy, provided its use is permitted by the network, local rules and streaming provider. It does not add titles, a subscription or viewing rights.

Compare that separate need using our guide to using a VPN for streaming. Check device support, total renewal cost and the provider’s restrictions before paying; do not buy one just because you bought a streaming subscription.

My final recommendation

Start with one service that covers the household’s immediate watchlist. Netflix is my general starting point; the alternatives win when a specific catalogue, existing benefit or live-channel need makes the choice clearer. Add a second service only when you can name what it supplies that the first one does not.
